August/September
Gabriella Melgarejo
Public Relations Coordinator
September 2, 2021
Position Assessment: As the Public Relations Coordinator, I have created the Back to School flyer, Fanny Pack Friday flyer, and Spirit Days flyer in collaboration with Emily Sesser. In the creation of the Back to School flyer, we decided to inform the students of the upcoming school events on the flyer. For the Fanny Pack Friday flyer, we informed the student body of the spirit day, Fanny Pack Friday. As for the Spirit Days flyer, we inserted the various spirit days onto the flyer. For the Back to School and Fanny Pack Friday flyers, we put them up throughout the school in high-traffic areas where students would be able to see them.
Standing Committee: I did not partake in any standing committees at this time but I plan on supporting some committees in the future.
Special Committee: I participated in the dance by writing down the names of 30+ sophomores on cards, cut them out, so they could be put on the windows of the student store to invite the student body to go to the dance. I also participated in Club Rush by capturing images of each club booth during the event so these images could be pushed out on the social media page of the school on Instagram.
Mentorship Evaluation/ Completion at time of Meeting: My mentor has been Bryan Ochoa, and I am grateful that we have this program in place. We can converse, and he has been a great help to my various questions since I am new to Leadership. I am glad that he is my mentor because he has provided me with some advice about Leadership and college, and he has been very friendly. If this program was not in place, I would be lost, because I have had a lot of questions regarding the Formal Report, and just general things about Leadership. I have always been a shy person, and Bryan is so outgoing that I feel comfortable asking him questions so I do not get behind in Leadership. These are the connections that I am making just early into the school year, so I cannot wait to see how these said connections will get stronger as time goes by.
Concerns: I feel like I have not been the best at speaking in class and engaging with other students, or voicing out my opinion when Morty wants feedback. When we were speaking about the pros and cons of Club Rush, I wanted to say something in regards to the discussion of Cultural Day, but I didn’t voice my opinion. I will work on getting better at this.
Positive Comment: I would like to give a positive comment to Bryan because he is very hardworking and helpful to everyone around him! He is very kind and has big dreams for the future, and I hope that he accomplishes them, because of his integrity.
Change: I see some people working harder than others, who seem to be doing nothing in class. This can cause a lot of pressure on one person to do their job, and I wonder if the people doing nothing really don’t have anything to work on, or if they are just wasting their time.
My Impact: During my art class, a lot of my classmates near my table had some questions about the dress-up spirit days and what was going to be happening at Club Rush, in addition to wanting information about the dance. I was happy to answer the questions about what to wear on the spirit days and what clubs they will see at Club Rush, and inviting them to join some clubs to get involved with the school and to go to the Back to School dance. I can imagine that they later informed their friends about these school events, creating more participation amongst the students for spirit days and events.

September/October
Gabriella Melgarejo
Public Relations Coordinator
10-13-2021
Position Assessment: In my position thus far, I have created the Spirit Days flyers for both freshmen and sophomores. In addition, I also created the Friday spirit days flyer. Emily Sesser and I then had the task to section those flyers for Mrs. Mortensen to put into teacher’s boxes, and then we hung up the rest of the flyers around the school. We have also been assigned the task of delivering the MyIntent bracelets to students in their classes.
Standing Committee: I have not partaken in any standing committees so far.
Special Committee: I was a part of the Homecoming committee for the Sophomores. I made the flyer for the Spirit Days, participated in the windows decorating contest by helping put up the decorations on our windows, participated in the parade at the end, and then helped at the set up for the homecoming game after the parade was finished.
Mentorship Evaluation/Completion at time of Meeting: My mentor is Bryan Ochoa and we have gone out to lunch together and successfully bonded and talked about many things. He is very easygoing and gives a lot of great advice which makes me comfortable to be able to conversate with him. The lunch that we spent with each other was great and I enjoyed it because of our conversations. I am again grateful for this mentorship because of all of his knowledge of leadership and his character. He gave me a lot of advice surrounding colleges and which classes to take, which I am grateful for.
Concerns: I feel as if the class as a whole has an issue with side commentary when we need to speak about issues at hand, an example would be when someone says something and then commentary follows that gets us off track when we don’t have enough time to get sidetracked.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes out to Naomi Wilbur for being so hardworking and dedicated to the program. She must be efficient in all her work to handle being a candidate for Homecoming, working for the coronation, and being the President of ASB. She was able to pull this all off, and I congratulate her for doing so.
Change: One change that I would like to see is that some of the things that someone could wear for the spirit days didn’t adhere to the theme of the day. I still will note that it is important to be as inclusive as possible, but some of the Spirit Days choices just didn’t go with the theme.
My Impact: Again, with the Spirit days, I told some of my classmates what the theme for each day was, what you could wear, and encouraged them to go to the parade to see our school spirit and have fun. I also encouraged my classmates to go out to the dance if they wish to. As part of my job, I hung up the flyers for the Homecoming Spirit Days, and I have made the impact of letting most students know the dress-up days since the flyers were in high-traffic areas.

November/December
Gabby Melgarejo
Public Relations Coordinator
12-07-2021
Position Assessment: In my position thus far for the month of November, I created the Dude Be Nice flyer, which was posted on social media, and Emily Sesser created the Blanket Drive flyer. We both participated in Dude Be Nice by going on the search for the Dudette this year. My CASL group also worked on the CASL self study and we were able to finish it.
Standing Committee: I was not able to participate in any standing committees at this time.
Special Committee: I participated in the Winter Formal committee by coming in on December 4th to help the sophomores out with the set up for Winter Formal. I also participated in the Dude Be Nice committee by creating publicity for it in the form of a flyer and participating in the search to find the Dudette this year.
Mentorship Evaluation/Completion at time of meeting: My mentor is Bryan Ochoa and I am very happy he is my mentor. We have bonded and connected on several occasions and he always gives me wonderful advice not only for Leadership but also other life problems. He is very easy to talk to and when I am learning new things in Leadership, such as setting up my website for the Professional, he checks up on me and lets me view his resume to see examples of what I should write, which is all helpful. I am very grateful for this mentorship program.
Concerns: Again, the concern that I have is the side conversations. We need to use every last minute efficiently, but I know that the side conversations and noise gets in the way of that. Personally, in order to work at my best, I like it to be absolutely silent, so I know how stressful it can be to hear so many voices at once.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes out to Kylee Brown for being able to plan out Winter Formal, even with all of the problems that occurred. On the day of the formal, the tent people arrived very late, which meant that she had to stay later as well working on the set up for the formal. Her hard work is recognized by me and others who saw all of the planning that went into Winter Formal.
Change: One change that I would like to speak about is the day for the door wrapping decorations. I understand why we decided to decorate the doors, but I think that the practicality of the project does not outweigh the effort that we put in. Due to the weather conditions and the student behavior, some of the decorations were completely destroyed. We could perhaps think of something else that would be similar to do, for the holiday spirit.
My Impact: My impact this time is the publicity for the Dude Be Nice week with all the information for the spirit days that was later posted on the Instagram of Ripon High School. I know that some students were anticipating for the week to arrive to see who the Dude or Dudette could be for this year and to also dress up or get some snacks on the spirit days. I hope that the students felt the atmosphere in that week, full of kindness towards one another.

January
Gabby Melgarejo
Public Relations Coordinator
12-07-2021
Position Assessment: For the month of January, me and the other Public Relations Coordinator, Emily Sesser, have created a Welcome Back To School post, two College Spirit Day posts, and a Friday Red and White flyer. We have each done and presented our speeches, participated in the workings of Winterfest, and we are about to/have done Encore with Norm. We have also participated in the Kids Against Hunger program by packing meals for families around our communities. We have created our articles for the ASCA Student Voices addition.
Standing Committee: I applied for Link Crew for the 2022-2023 school year and I will be participating in 8th Grade Welcome Day.
Special Committee: I participated in the Winterfest committee by working on our poster and pillar at Spencer Redula’s house. On the week of Winterfest, I came in at 7 AM to help with the pillar, shopping cart, and windows and we were successful with all decorations.
Mentorship Evaluation/Completion at time of meeting: Bryan Ochoa is someone that I am happy to have as a mentor due to his kindness and wonderful personality. Still, he helps me out whenever I have questions and checks up on me during class to make sure that I am doing well, which is something that I really appreciate. It is nice to have someone to check up on you, to be so caring and attentive like Bryan is. I can tell that he really cares about our Leadership class and is hardworking and passionate about the things that he likes. He is also really funny and just relatable as a person which makes it easier to talk to him. Overall, we are still doing great.
Concerns: One concern that I have is the amount of publicity that our events have. I feel as if our events do not get as much attention as they should be getting and there should be more publicity and attention driven to these events, I am partly responsible for this as I am the Public Relations Coordinator so I am able to drive more publicity for these events. Also, not many students even know what these events are about, and when they ask their teacher, the teacher does not even know as well. I also think to help the publication, these events should be showcased a bit earlier.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes out to Jenna Skavdahl for being a kind, hardworking, and caring person. She always works so hard for the sophomores even though she has many honors and AP classes, which shows how hardworking and dedicated she is.
Change: One change that I would have is to limit the number of contests for Winterfest. As the contests go on and on, students start to lose creativity or ideas for their decorations, and instead of these contests being something fun and exciting to be a part of, they can sort of feel like a tedious task because of how many there are, the ideas that do exist are being stretched thin. With fewer contests, not only will the decorations be more creative and thought out, but they will also be appreciated more by the students.
My Impact: My impact is my help for the sophomores for Winterfest. When we went to work at Spencer’s house, I was the second last to leave, and I wanted to make sure that all work that could be done, was done. I know that the work that I put in mattered and made an impact.

February/March
Gabby Melgarejo
Public Relations Coordinator
04-14-2021
Position Assessment: For the months of February and March, Emily Sesser and I have created multiple flyers. We both have created a college spirit day flyer and a flyer for the Gallery of the Arts as well. We both have also worked on The Challenge, as we are both leaders of the publicity group. We are working on getting the posters completed and organizing them so that we know which are done and which are in completion.
Standing Committee: I will be in Link Crew for the school year of 2022-2023 and have been involved in 8th Grade Welcome Day. I also have started working for the Renaissance program in preparation for my upcoming position in Leadership, which would be the Renaissance/Link Crew Coordinator. I have put student names on the 3.0 and 4.0 cards, labeled the bags with their room number, and organized the bags into their classrooms.
Special Committee: I have helped out at the 5th annual Gallery of the Arts and at the Dodgeball Tournament. I am also involved in The Challenge as the leader of the publicity committee.
Mentorship Evaluation/Completion at Time of Meeting: Bryan is my mentor, and he has given me much advice and has supported me so much through leadership and my other academic endeavors that I face. He is so uplifting and positive, I am really glad that he is my mentor because I can always count on him to help me and to encourage me through anything. The Mentor Project A-Z cards that he gave me were really nice, I love the creativity that he put into them. I put much effort into making my cards for him to showcase how grateful I am to have him helping me through every step of the way. He has also reviewed my website and has helped me with my resume as well, by giving tips on what I should and should not include in my resume. He gives a lot of great advice, not only for my classes, but other problems that I would have, like if I had issues with my friends, he gives me advice and tells me what would be the best thing to do.
Concerns: My concern is that I feel like some people aren’t as working hard as they should be during the work days or the days that we get to work on The Challenge, I feel like people are just talking to their friends and not getting any work done.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes out to Gabbi Illardi. Her job is far from being easy, as it requires much work, communication, time out of school, and much more. I was able to see how much work it is seeing how many tasks she had to complete for Renaissance, it is truly a job that is underappreciated so I want to make sure that Gabbi gets the appreciation that she deserves. She is also such a kind, welcoming, and outgoing person, someone perfect for Leadership.
Change: One change that I would have is to make the Dodgeball Tournament longer, I would say about a week longer, because I feel as if the games were rushed and it went by really quickly. If there were two weeks for the tournament, I feel like more people would go as well because they have more days to attend it in case they are busy for lunch, and the longer tournament builds up more anticipation for the final round. This can also allow for more teams to be involved as well and a chance for people who lost their first game to enter the tournament again.
My Impact: My impact is my help in the Renaissance program, not only am I impacting others, but I feel like I impacted myself as well because I was able to gain some experience of what it is like to work in Renaissance, and I know that for next year, I will have a big job and I need at least some experience for it. I impacted the other Renaissance people because we will be able to complete the Renaissance awards quicker, and the students themselves will receive their awards quicker.

Position Assessment: For the final months, I was able to complete The Challenge, being a part of the Publicity Committee. For The Challenge, I created a flyer to advertise the Teacher Appreciation Day, and I went to help out with the End of the Year dance. I also attended the Leadership Banquet on May 12th. I attended the CASL Area A leadership conference in Modesto on May 3rd, I went to two workshops, and one of them was taught by Mr. Rangel. Me and some other Leadership kids worked at Love Ripon, shoveling bark into various city parks. I completed my mock interview as well, with Dr. Stanford, and I am happy to say that I have learned a lot from him and I know more about the career that I want to pursue now.
Standing Committee: I am in Link Crew so I participated in the Link Crew Study Buddy night, and next year I will be even more involved with Link Crew and Renaissance as I will be the Renaissance and Link Crew Coordinator.
Special Committee: I was involved in the Challenge, I helped with the publicity and dance.
Mentorship Evaluations/Completion at Time of Meeting: It is the end of the year, and also the end of my leadership mentorship with Bryan. It feels very bittersweet because I am glad that he will go on prospering at college, but because he is leaving, I know I will miss seeing him in Leadership, and getting all of his advice. I can’t wait for him to move on to bigger and better things, and I wish him the best of luck in college. I am very happy to have had him as my mentor, seeing how different I was at the beginning of the year, I can see the influence that he has had on me, and seeing him as a role model has helped me with my self-confidence as I try slowly to get out of my comfort zone.
Concerns: My concern is the lack of communication that happened within The Challenge, I feel like everyone, including myself, could’ve communicated better, but I feel like this also was balanced out by how happy the students were with what we put out, so we just need to work better on communication so that we all know what is happening.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes out to Naomi! She is a very hard-working President and she has helped out the Leadership class so many times, she is always there to remind us about something and she is always on top of everything.
Change: One change that I would have is the amount of publicity that happened with The Challenge, maybe more in-person posters so that the whole student body can see the Appreciation Week instead of just the ones that have Instagram. More publicity would mean more turnout, but I am still happy with the turnout that we had, especially on the last day, I saw so many people there getting Otter Pops and leis.
My Impact: My impact is the flier that I made as a reminder for Teacher’s Appreciation Day, I am hoping that some school staff saw and remembered to stop by the teacher’s lounge for goodies that they need.

1. What committee(s) have you been place on, explain them, what is your role?
I am on the committee of Gift to Staff and we will be providing breakfast along with other items, such as a notecard with a positive message to staff outside of teachers. My role is to work on some of the procedure forms to buy the fruit juices and notecards, making sure that they are correct and sent in on time and that every staff member will have one of each. I also will be writing some of the messages on the notecards.
2. What did you contribute during the week to the committee work and presentation for next week?
I contributed during the week by assisting Alizeh with any work that she needed done, so setting up the purchase order to get the notecards for the nice messages to the staff and the fruit juices to give them for their breakfast. I found which supplies to get for them on Amazon and made sure that everyone liked the choices that I made.
3. What will you be in charge of the week of the challenge?
I will be in charge of preparing the notecards with the positive messages and packaging them with the assorted breakfast items so that the staff can enjoy them on the morning of. Most likely, we would also be getting the muffins around that time or week so I would be going with the other committee members to pick up the muffins so that they can be fresh.
4. What are some pros that you saw during this week while planning and executing various items?
Some pros that I saw were that a lot of people were working and made much progress regarding their committees because I could see on the slides that they completed most of their work and are just waiting for the week of actually be able to execute that since a lot of the tasks are more dependent on being near the actual week of the Challenge.
5. What are some cons that you saw during this week while planning and executing various items?
Some cons that I saw were that as the week progressed, people got a bit more lazy and started doing less and less work or getting distracted on other things like talking to their friends. But I still say that this was at a minimum, as most people understood that this event is very important and we need to be on top of it to be able to be successful. The amount of talking that there was wasn’t over the top and it didn’t distract me in any way, but I did notice it sometimes when I was working. I don’t understand how some people were just goofing off slightly if we had much work to do that week but the positive part is that I’m sure that most if not all did turn in their work.
6. What will you be speaking about in the formal presentation?
I will speak about what has been done regarding our work within the committee with Emily, just giving a run down on everything that we completed during the week. The various POs have been done and they were already done early in the week, because we knew how to find the muffins, juices, bags, and notecards efficiently and quickly without wasting any time. We just haven’t gotten to the actual preparation because that is more towards the actual challenge because we do not need to buy the muffins now.
7. What is your overall opinion of the event idea?
My overall opinion of the event idea is that I am excited for what is about to come because i feel like we are much more prepared than we were than last year, and I don’t know what exactly contributed to all of this but Mak has been doing an amazing job at keeping in touch with all of the committee lead members to make sure that everything is going smoothly. She also gives us updates every day or tells us when the work is due which is very helpful because I can keep track of everything that I have to do. I am especially excited for our committee work because I feel like it is a good idea to give back to the staff and I have been involved with the POs and such so I am very involved and up to date. Overall, I feel good, and I expect everyone else to have been productive.
8. Do you believe this class will be successful in planning and executing this event?
Yes, as I have stated in the question above, Mak has done an amazing job at keeping everyone on track, including myself, and I feel like she would not let people be lazy and not do the work or not turn it in on time. But at the same time, all of the responsibilities of the work should not be on her, so that is where the rest of the class comes into play. I am also positive in this aspect because I have seen people in class working very hard and I keep track of the document that was shared to all of us and I see that people are making progress every single day and I am so proud. They are finishing the assignments every day and are quick to do the work. Along with the other assignments, such as the mentor coloring book, people have been productive. We just need to keep this streak going which may prove to be a difficult feat but if we have all of this work done already it would just be wasteful for us to just throw it all away and become lazy.
9. What should be done to peers in the class that do not fulfill their jobs?
I feel like they should receive a serious punishment of some kind, because they need to understand that we all need to contribute to this project and some of us just cannot sit in the back and watch all the others do the work because that is simply very unfair. I feel like they should get a heavy assignment assigned to them so that they can understand what it is like to have to do hard work because of all of the work that they skipped out on. This could also be a very serious issue because if they do not fulfill their positions that means that the entirety of the Challenge could fail and the student body and staff could be disappointed in us because we were not able to fulfill what we were supposed to do.
10. What is your favorite aspect to this event? What are you excited most for occurring?
My favorite aspect to this event is the dance that is going to occur. I feel like this year it has many more add-ons to it, which hopefully can make more people go to the dance or feel excited about all of the events that are happening. But I am also really excited for our committee work because I feel like it is time for us to give back to the staff and the breakfast and nice notes to them is just the perfect gift for that. But like I said, I will probably have to work at the dance for Red Cross and Leadership so I am excited for that because I hope to see people excited about all of the additions and the general atmosphere of the dance.
